Summary:
Rossetti is careful to couch his criticism of this non-Academy exhibition in neutral terms, saying that he always finds something of merit in "the novel collection" of continental pictures assembled by Goupil, but at the same time, he can't say that in this exhibition the best work by the best men.
Among the best in the exhibition Rossetti names Gerome, Troyon, Daubigny and Pasini. He discusses Gerome's work comparatively, saying the work in this exhibition is among the least accomplished among all of his work. Rossetti critiques the top five artists he mentioned in terms of minimal description and limited notice of design and effect.
Beyond these five contributors, Rossetti says "we must be more summary than the merits of the works might suggest," which he follows with a listing of works and artists with little or no critical commentary.
